Job Description

The role is primarily for a desk-based power system studies engineer within an experienced and well-regarded team. The role will be developed around individuals that are viewed as having potential for the company and the team.

 

Typical projects will include:

  • Generation project connections

  • Utility network reinforcement studies

  • Petro-chemical system analysis

  • Traction system analysis

  • Project feasibility studies

  • Strategic power system analysis

  • Software based analysis solutions

  • Supporting wind project and installation teams

  • Diverse inter-company energy projects

 

You are expected to have a good client focus and where required be prepared to work as part of the client team. The ability to work independently is highly desirable, however all staff are expected to discuss project problems openly within the company. Most of our projects are client confidential and so discretion is imperative with external parties.

 

Desirable Skills

The candidate should have a good selection of the following. The list is not exhaustive or mandatory as the candidate will be assessed on overall skills, experience and enthusiasm for the role.

  • Loadflow & contingency analysis

  • Fault level studies and circuit breaker rating

  • Motor start / load-shedding studies

  • Transient stability and dynamic studies

  • Controller and equipment modelling

  • Harmonic Analysis and filter design

  • Protection and co-ordination

  • Control system design and analysis

  • Good knowledge of UK and international standards and codes

  • EMT analysis

  • Power electronics and HVDC

  • Good word-processing and spreadsheet knowledge

  • Project management or project engineering experience

  • Commercial awareness

  • Economic analysis and cost-benefit appraisals

  • Knowledge of QA systems and document management

 

Software knowledge: IPSA, PSSE, PSLF, DigSilent, PSCAD, EMTP, ATP, DINIS, Viper, Sincal, PowerTools, Fortran, C++, C, Python, VBA, Matlab, etc.

 

Degree based education or equivalent, Chartered Engineer status or pending.

 

Good general numeric and mathematical skills.

 

Broad understanding of electrical engineering ranging from communications, hardware, software, control systems and power systems.

 

The candidate must possess good verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to produce high quality written technical reports.

 

Location

Opportunities are available in both main TNEI offices in Manchester or Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Both offices are central city with good public transport links to the surrounding areas. Later secondment opportunities may be possible depending on skills, projects and any specific personal requirements/desires.
