Typical Projects
- Industrial System Analysis – System design compliance assessments of major oil and gas facilities including the Shell Sakhalin II LNG refinery and Exxon South Hook LNG import terminal. This included analysis of loadflow, fault level, motor starting, transient stability, harmonics, and protection review and setting. All work is performed to DEP, IEC or other appropriate standards.
- Wind Farm Development – We routinely provide grid connection studies to both small and large wind farmdevelopers. These studies typically start with initial site selection and capacity studies for single 20kW turbines through to 1GW wind farms. Grid connection studies are undertaken to identify the main equipment ratings and connection applications are submitted with TNEI providing a coherent interface between the developer and the network operator. Grid code compliance studies requiring detailed transient and harmonic analysis are also undertaken to ensure all aspects of the relevant grid code are met.
- Generator Modelling – Doubly fed induction generators and fully converter fed turbines comprise complex and fast acting control systems which can present particular difficulties when undertaking dynamic and transient system studies. The Power Systems team has produced these detailed dynamic models for a large range of windturbines for a significant proportion of manufacturers. These models are being continually developed for a number of software packages such as PSS/e, IPSA+ and PSLF.
- Advanced Technologies – We have a number of projects requiring the application of new and novel technologies. HVdc links for large wind farms are being considered and we have undertaken loadflow and fault level feasibility studies and costing analysis for a number of projects in the UK. We have also undertaken strategic power system studies, including offshore wind projects, wave energy projects and a number of large energy storage plants. Our work typically comprises initial site selection studies through to loadflow, fault analysis and grid connection investigations, reinforcement studies and costings.
- Analysis Tools – In order to support this high quality analysis the Power Systems team uses a wide range of analysis tools. This ensures that we have the most appropriate tool for the solution required and the experience of the team is such that we can readily apply and adapt these tools to the work required. We currently use anumber of products including: IPSA+, PSS/e, PSLF,PSCAD, ATP, Matlab, SKM PowerTools CAPTOR and ASSESS.
Our varied work sometimes requires that bespoke solutions are required. We have the expertise to scope and develop customised applications to meet individual requirements. These solutions include customised reporting tools and SCADA interfaces for analysis software plus long term planning tools to undertake specialised contingency analysis.
