We provide specialist analysis and power system design expertise for a number of major offshore windfarm projects in the UK and European territorial waters with project size ranging from 100MW-1000MW projects. We are currently leading several industry initiatives to evaluate the applicability of offshore HVDC technologies from a technological, financial, operational and regulatory perspective, including the ISLES project for the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scottish Governments. This includes the development of Life Cycle Cost models for offshore wind farms to provide justification for capital expenditure against operational and maintenance plans including consideration of network reliability and availability, power losses and the cost of energy not delivered.
Our extensive experience in modelling the power characteristics of offshore generation technologies and the implications on grid capacity, stability and technology choice is viewed as a key differentiating factor by our clients. This has been used to support technical evaluation of tender responses and technology due-diligence, in particular as part of the transitional OFTO process.
In the process of this work, we have developed software tools to analyse the tradeoffs between capital cost, operation and maintenance costs, losses and reliability/availability. We have excellent relations with key electrical technologysuppliers, including the critical VSC HVDC technologies.
Therefore it is a core part of our business that we remain at the forefront of the current thinking and practices to both retain staff as well as continue as a strong independent consultancy business.
