Ecology

BatTNEI has extensive experience of undertaking both botanical and protected species surveys and all of TNEI’s ecologists are members of the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (IEEM). TNEI staff also hold licenses from Natural England, Scottish Natural Heritage and Countryside Council for Wales, enabling them to undertake surveys on bats, great crested newts and a range of other protected species.

The team’s ecological services are widely used for projects ranging from small housing redevelopments in urban and suburban areas, to large wind developments in rural areas and a range of surveys on a series of historic buildings for bodies including English Heritage. Members of the team have also worked on projects for local authorities, Government bodies and multi-national corporations.

The team has expertise in providing:

  • Desk-based ecological studies and consultation
  • Extended Phase 1 habitat surveys
  • Detailed botanical surveys
  • Great crested newt surveys
  • Bat roost surveys (including building inspection, tree risk assessment and emergence)
  • Bat activity surveys (e.g. transects for commuting and foraging areas)
  • Remote bat monitoring, including “at height” work (e.g. on meteorological masts)
  • Reptile surveys
  • Badger, water vole, otter and red squirrel surveys
  • BREEAM reports

As well as offering the above suite of surveys and reports for smaller developments, where schemes require full Environmental Impact Assessments the team is able to undertake surveys and produce chapters and supporting reports suitable to support the planning application. This includes preparation of ecological documents for Environmental Statements and the production of mitigation strategies, method statements and management plans where required. TNEI also undertakes detailed reviews of ecological and ornithological impact assessment chapters and reports.
